Capturely performs remote professional headshots for enterprise clients through connecting their employees with a professional photographer over a smartphone. The photographer connects to and remotely controls the client’s smartphone to procure the raw imagery.

Their initial pilot relied on a rough, non-scalable interface. To address this, we proposed a redesigned experience that works seamlessly with their existing backend and APIs, making the product more intuitive, scalable, and enterprise-ready.

What Capturely currently had was a single screen that somehow got outputs.
But the outputs too were not usable 80% of the times resulting in heavy
business costs.

The current system was so broken that we had to start from scratch and understand the real user journeys and needs of all three stakeholders: the photographers, the employees and the company.

Enterprise photoshoots are logistically complex and time-consuming, with inconsistent quality across locations.

Across all three user groups, a clear pattern emerged: the core challenge was streamlining coordination, preparation, and control in a remote setting.

The current prototype failed to address this, relying on a single-screen interface without the systems needed to support a seamless experience.

Recreating a real-world experience online using everyday devices is both challenging and comes with inherent trade-offs.

We knew we were giving up a lot by relying on the client’s phone: control, consistency, and ideal setups. Instead of forcing perfection, we focused on making it work in the real world: guiding users simply and giving client and photographers as much control as possible without making it confusing.

Photographers will lose access to their own equipment, so we had to design an interface that lets them control and optimize the client’s camera with the same precision, without added complexity.

We had to introduce a clear communication loop to prepare companies and their employees, especially those less tech-savvy.

We had to build a clean design to enable the interaction between photographer and client to mirror a real studio session, seamless direction, feedback, and control.

Photographers need control, but too many controls = complexity.
We added context-aware controls (based on device capabilities) like camera type, focal length, zoom and grid.

Real-time device sync was also integrated to enable seamless communication between photographer and the employee. We achieved maximum of what was possible with client device constraints, without compromising with the ideal output.

Once the photoshoot wraps up, clients can quickly go through their photos and pick their favourites within a short time. It’s a simple way to stay involved while the photographer takes a quick breather.

Once they’re done, or if they skip or time runs out, the photographer is notified and makes the final selections, keeping the client’s preferences in mind before sending the images for retouching.

Breaking the journey into clear steps: photoshoot, favourites, and final selection made the whole experience feel more natural and easier to follow.

It reduced confusion, improved coordination, and helped both clients and photographers stay in sync.

Clients often joined the session without a clear idea of what to expect or how to prepare. Photographers ended up spending extra time walking them through the process, making calls longer and taking away from the actual photoshoot experience.

Introducing the Greenroom

Introducing the Greenroom

The Greenroom is a simple prep space between the client and the photographer. It helps users get ready for the shoot with easy guidance on phone placement, lighting, framing, and posture.

If the photographer hasn’t joined yet, users wait here and prep, so when the session starts, everything feels smooth and ready.

The biggest unlock wasn’t better technology, it was designing the experience in the right order.

By moving preparation before the interaction, things felt a lot smoother. There was less chaos, sessions ran more efficiently, and the whole experience started to feel as polished as a real studio shoot.

As the world moves toward a more video-first way of communicating, the same approach can extend beyond photos. The system could enable guided, remote video capture where users record high-quality videos on their own devices, while still receiving real-time direction.

With the right mix of guidance, framing, and post-processing, production-level video could become just as accessible and scalable as headshots, without the need for traditional setups or equipment.
